STAYED: THE NAKA ISLAND
Laying just a stone’s throw offshore from Ao Por Grand Marina in the north east of Phuket is the Naka island Resort. Inarguably the epitome of a tropical island resort, The Naka is fortunate enough to be the only resort on the island and graced with outrageous views of Phang Nga Bay’s limestone islands and the steaming mountains of Phuket. As a member of the prestigious Luxury Collection of offerings from the Marriot group, guests can expect a refined level of service, a unique and memorable location, and overall elevated vacation experience.
The resort’s 67 villas are sprinkled amongst the forest which unfolds on the northern headland of the roughly 3,500 acre island – much of which is jungled or mangroves. At the Naka Island you are truly out away from it all and while there is a distinct lack of the hustle and bustle of the modern world, you will find the modern amenities that keep you comfortable: two delectable restaurants (armed with an in-house sommerlier and formidable wine selection), spa, boutique shop, high speed internet, library, and speedboats to ferry you to the mainland.
The villas have a unique design reminiscent of American Southwest adobe with rounded corners and wooden timbers inside and out. The earthen-coloured structures have a flow that blends with the natural environment. Most villas have their own private infinity pool and sala. There are couches, cushions, and little nooks for chilling all over – perfect for hunkering down with a book. The interiors are warm and inviting with brass hardware, linen drapes, and towering vaulted ceilings lined with woven panels. Bathrooms are separated by an enclosed walkway and are equipped with steam rooms, Thann skincare and aromatherapy products, and an outdoor bathtub with a view.
Rooms are decked out with a vast array of amenities like monstrous flat screen TVs, Bluetooth speakers, two ways to make coffee (bonus!), and much more. Once you’ve reached maximum relaxation and need some action, there’s plenty to do. A designated pétanque court, stand up paddle boards, kayaks, windsurfing, and a sailing catamaran are all available to guests. Guided kayak tours through the protected wildlife-rich mangrove forest can be arranged at higher tides. There’s even a small local village just outside of the resort where you can experience some local culture. Jet skis are often available for rent and you can zip around to other islands including nearby Koh Yao Yai.
The Naka Island provides a serene and relaxing desert island feel without having to wander too far from shore. It’s luxurious tropical paradise ideal for decompressing just on the fringe of the hustle and bustle of daily life.
