Two Days of Prayer
Mandalay | 8-9 Feb 2020
The Mahamuni Pagoda festival comes out to shine with the first full moon in the lunar month of Thabodwe. Thousands of pilgrims converge on the pagoda to pay homage to its Buddha image with candles, incense sticks and flowers.
During the day, a traditional “Chin Lone” or cane ball tournament draws teams from across the country, while cauldrons of the Burmese glutinous rice “Htamane” are cooked by men for everyone to savour.
The mood shifts in the evening when comedy shows, plays and puppetry take centre stage. If you happen to be in Mandalay, this is the best place to explore Myanmar’s heritage – but be prepared for huge crowds.
