The Sensory Sanctuary

At the heart of Southeast Asia’s buzzing creative scene, a new chapter of storytelling is being written – and printed. Celebrating a decade of the influential Spacebar Zine, The Independent Print Club (IPC) is hatching what it calls the “New Print Culture” at the heart of the prestigious One Bangkok lifestyle hub. Don’t be fooled by its bookstore looks. This revolution against digital fatigue features a boutique, gallery, mini-library, and interactive workshop – all championing the tactile and timeless nature of independent publishing. The whiff of ink, the riffle of pages, and the gloss of posters create a rare sensory paradise for lovers of printmaking.

Through a global network spanning Bangkok to Tokyo and Vienna, the club also curates an exclusive selection of experimental zines and graphic novels that explore the outer limits of print. The colourful journey continues with unique techniques like Risograph printing, a method beloved for its vibrant, layered aesthetic and unpredictability that gives each print a soul. Meanwhile the Paper & Ink Lab invites visitors to share their visions by creating their own custom zines, art prints, posters. By transforming creative energy into tangible lifestyle products, the Independent Print Club is rewriting Bangkok’s reputation as a vibrant regional hub of analog artistry.

Infinite Potential of Paper

Further south, the revolution continues at STPI – Creative Workshop & Gallery in Singapore. No mere institution, STPI is a dynamic laboratory that has been revolutionising the art world one print at a time for years. Its world-renowned residency programme invites international artists to step out of their comfort zones and collaborate with master printmakers. This collision of minds pushes the boundaries of traditional techniques, fostering an environment of innovation where paper is no longer a blank canvas, but a diving board for daring contemporary-art acrobatics. Paper becomes a vehicle for challenging conventions and exploring complex socio-cultural themes.

This bold commitment to experimentation has yielded significant bodies of work that now reside in major international collections, stretching the boundaries of modern print art. A prime example is the upcoming solo exhibition Strange Monster View by celebrated Indonesian artist Eko Nugroho. Running from August 22 to October 10, the showcase transports visitors into a distorted world that uses the medium of print to explore widespread surveillance and the complexities of human identity. Looking further ahead to 2027, STPI will highlight the pinnacle of Thai artistic excellence with highly anticipated solo exhibitions by previous resident artists Pinaree Sanpitak in August and Udomsak Krisanamis in October. International exhibitions like these have secured STPI’s reputation as a vital hub for global artistic exchange, where the “paper pulse” of the region beats strongest.

The philosophy here is Iron and Ink – a seamless merger of traditional craftsmanship with cutting-edge technology. Visitors can delve deep into Hong Kong’s rich print history at the exhibition Beyond the Ordinary – Contemporary Book Art. This showcase celebrates the storied legacy of movable-type printing through the stories of eight master printers. It highlights the meticulous beauty of traditional typesetting and binding, contrasting these slow arts with the rapid spread of modern AI. In this space, contemporary artists and writers are encouraged to transcend the physical constraints of paper, resurrecting the printed word as a vital tool for social reflection and impact. By engaging nearly half a million people through community workshops, the hub ensures that printmaking remains a dynamic, inclusive, and progressive force in the city’s cultural landscape.
