Go with the Flow
Phnom Penh
For a few days in November, Phnom Penh’s river dance takes centre stage as Bon Om Touk transforms Sisowath Quay on the west bank of the Tonlé Sap into a bustling hub of fun.
Celebrating the reversal of the Tonlé Sap current – a unique natural wonder that drives Cambodia’s agricultural cycle – the festival features colourful boat races, lively street fairs and evening fireworks.
The festivities date back centuries and originally marked the Khmer Empire’s naval victories. Today, they remain one of the country’s most cherished social gatherings, with people flocking to the riverfront to cheer on hundreds of elaborately decorated longboats competing on the water. As night falls, the mighty waterway is illuminated by glittering processions and riverside revelry that showcase Phnom Penh’s party spirit.
