Sukhothai Airport and Bangkok Airways Reinforce Safety with Emergency Drill

Sukhothai Airport, owned and operated by Bangkok Airways, recently conducted its 2026 Full-Scale Emergency Exercise, simulating an inflight emergency leading to a runway accident. Held at the airport in Sawankhalok district, the drill tested the facility’s emergency preparedness and coordination among relevant agencies.

Sukhothai’s Deputy Governor Lieutenant Commander Pattarachai Kantahirun presided over the exercise, and was joined by representatives from various agencies, including Deputy Director of Sukhothai Aiport Ms. Somporn Pungphoti.

The exercise centred on two scenarios. First, a simulated fire in an overhead baggage compartment prompts the pilot to make an emergency landing. Next, severe weather forces a hard landing, causing the plane to skid off the wet runway. This triggers full airport emergency protocols, including evacuating passengers and crew and deploying rescue and emergency response teams.

Emergency medical services, firefighting units, police, military personnel and local support organisations responded in full force. The drill tested critical operational elements, including the Incident Command System, inter-agency communication, passenger evacuation and casualty management.

The exercise was conducted in strict compliance with International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) standards, which require full-scale aerodrome emergency drills every two years, as well as the Civil Aviation Authority of Thailand (CAAT)’s safety regulations.

Sukhothai Airport and Bangkok Airways deploy continuous training and proactive preparedness to reinforce passenger safety and operational excellence.
