Wild Hives, Close-Up
Siem Reap
Just outside Siem Reap, the centuries-old tradition of rafter beekeeping still hums with life. This unique practice uses angled tree poles, or rafters, to attract migrating giant honeybees, allowing safe, sustainable honey harvesting and a rare chance to observe wild bees up close.
Bees Unlimited, an NGO founded in 2008, blends indigenous knowledge with modern techniques to support village-based training and sustainable livelihoods. As shifting weather patterns threaten this tradition, the group also offers eco-tours that highlight local conservation efforts.
