Laos’ largest ethnic group, the Khmu, welcome visitors to join their traditional New Year rituals, feasts and offerings in December. Known as Boun Pod Pi – or Boun Kreu – “opening the new year” is a time for spiritual renewal and communal togetherness. Visitors can dive into a rich stew of customs, from ancestral offerings to traditional music, dances and communal meals.

Highlights include blessing ceremonies led by village elders, ritual offerings to spirits, and vibrant folk performances. Emphasising community bonding, the festival also features hearty banquets of traditional delicacies including sticky rice, grilled meats, and forest herbs.
