New Bahru, Singapore
Day 1: Dive Into Creativity

Singapore’s Jewel Changi Airport – a marvel of architecture and tropical wonders – is a fitting start to your adventure. After checking in at a nearby hotel, it’s time to dive right into the vibrant heart of the city. A perfect place to begin your trip is the up-and-coming district of New Bahru, conveniently located along Beach Road. Known for its gleaming modernity, this area built on the legacy of Nan Chiau High School delivers history with a contemporary twist.

Explore the expansive halls, storied corridors, and stunningly restored architecture to discover local artisan shops, innovative eateries, wellness studios, and cultural spaces. Don’t miss Soilboy, a quirky plant design studio that promotes sustainable urban gardening – the perfect harmony of nature and modern life. Each corner you turn reveals unique shops and experiences, from eclectic fashion boutiques to artisanal coffee spots.

Next, make your way to Cairnhill Road, steeped in rich history dating back to the early 1840s. Once a thriving nutmeg plantation, this area now boasts beautifully restored shophouses that serve as a living museum of Singapore’s architectural past. Snap photos of the charming facades, each of which tell a story of the city’s evolution.

As sunset approaches, it’s time for dinner at Newton Food Centre, a culinary paradise buzzing with activity. This hawker centre is famous for its mouth-watering local eats, and the sizzling aroma of food attracts both Singaporeans and tourists alike. Indulge in iconic dishes like satay skewers, aromatic noodle dishes, and the star of the show, chilli crab served with fried buns. The vibrant atmosphere draws you in, as the sounds of sizzling, chatting, and laughter create an unforgettable dining experience.

After your meal, take a leisurely stroll along Orchard Road, Singapore’s premier shopping destination, where the city’s energy peaks at night. Twinkling lights and a lively atmosphere offer the perfect end to your explorations on Day 1.

Gillman Barracks
Day 2: Artistic Awakenings and Natural Beauty

On Day Two, prepare to immerse yourself in Singapore’s contemporary art and nature as you venture to Gillman Barracks on Lock Road. Originally built in 1935 to accommodate troops, this historic site has transformed into a hub for contemporary arts. Here, the array of international art galleries, cafés, and the NTU Centre for Contemporary Art Singapore reflects the city’s ambition to position itself on the global art map.

Stroll through the preserved colonial structures, taking in the multitude of art installations by both local and international artists. Each gallery presents a unique perspective on modern art, allowing you to connect with creativity in various forms. Spend a few hours exploring block by block, and revel in the beauty of artistic expression.

After satisfying your cultural thirst, set your sights on Henderson Waves, a stunning pedestrian bridge that arches elegantly over Henderson Road, connecting to the scenic Southern Ridges. Serene green pathways leading up to the bridge offer a refreshing escape from the city buzz, making it easy to forget the tropical heat.

Crossing Henderson Waves is an experience in itself; the bridge’s architectural brilliance and lush tropical backdrop create a unique atmosphere. Take a moment to pause at the viewing decks and soak in the stunning panoramic views. This is where the beauty of nature and urban design majestically merge, creating a sense of serenity amid the bustling city.

Once you’ve crossed the bridge, head to Telok Blangah Hill Park for a breath of fresh air. The park features easy-level Forest Walks and moderate-level Earth Trails that weave through the lush greenery, making you feel as if you’ve stepped into another world. The trails, surrounded by mature trees and vibrant flora, are perfect for a reflective walk or a leisurely stroll.

Post-exploration, fuel up at Holland Village Market & Food Centre, just a quick Grab ride away. This lively food haven is particularly beloved by locals for its incredible selection of hawker food. Treat yourself to the Fried Carrot Cake – a historical dish crafted from glutinous rice flour and radish, served crispy and often topped with an egg omelette – a local delicacy that’s hard to come by outside Singapore. But don’t miss the opportunity to savour the roasted chicken rice from the stall with the longest queue, a testament to its legendary taste.

With your tummy happy, spend an afternoon meandering through the vibrant streets of Singapore. Absorb the lively mix of multinational residents and tourists, each contributing to the city’s multicultural flair. Then, stop by the National Gallery Singapore on St. Andrew’s Road. Housed in the former Supreme Court and City Hall, this architectural masterpiece is as stunning outside as it is within.

As you wander among the exhibits, take a moment to appreciate the breath-taking interior. The gallery’s collection highlights Southeast Asian art the likes of which you’ve never seen before, while the bridge crossings and stunning dome-like structures create a mesmerising experience even outside the exhibition rooms. Don’t miss the Rotunda Library & Archieve, which once served as the Law Library – now a research hub for Southeast Asian art history.
