The year is leaving with a bang. From ancient rituals and contemporary art to global music festivals and Christmas in the tropics, the last two months bring some of the year’s best and biggest reasons to celebrate.

From December 11 to 13, Tomorrowland arrives in Thailand for its first full-scale Asian festival, transforming Wisdom Valley near Pattaya into a fantasy of electronic music, monumental stages and tens of thousands of revellers.

The final weeks of 2026 offer plenty of other reasons to travel. Ruins in Sukhothai lit by candles, lanterns drifting in Chiang Mai’s night sky, contemporary art in Bangkok, and bright lights in Hong Kong and Singapore. Out in the Indian Ocean, Christmas is enjoyed barefoot, with warm turquoise waters and powder-soft white sand in place of snow.

From all-night dancing to centuries-old rites to gatherings of curious “wonderers” and full-scale partying, these are celebrations worth travelling for as the year draws to a close.

December 11-13 | Wisdom Valley

Few music festivals can match Tomorrowland for spectacle. The Belgian electronic-music phenomenon is famous for fantastical dance floors, theatrical stages and pyrotechnics – along with some of the biggest names in electronic music drawing in crowds.

This December, the neon pulsing party arrives in Asia for the first time. Wisdom Valley, acres of open countryside near Pattaya, will become Tomorrowland Thailand for three days. The festival is expected to draw over 50,000 people per day for performances by more than 100 artists from across the globe on a variety of different stages. Among the headliners are Martin Garrix, Swedish House Mafia, Afrojack, Alan Walker and Steve Aoki, alongside more than 20 top Thai artists.

But star DJs are just the icing on the cake. Stages, stories, costumes and visual effects will merge to create a temporary universe called Consciencia, an imagined world shaped around six emotions: wonder, love, anger, joy, desire and sadness.

December 3-7 | The Fields at Siam Country Club

A week before Tomorrowland turns up the volume, Wonderfruit sprouts just outside Pattaya. This annual festival transforms The Fields at Siam Country Club into a playground of music, art, architecture, food and wellness. Curious wanderers, music and art lovers and sustainability-minded festivalgoers come together for the DJs, live sets and art installations.

The pleasure lies in getting lost. Follow music through the trees and you might stumble upon an intimate forest performance or magical artworks. Elsewhere, chefs cook over open flames, monumental bamboo structures rise from the fields, and sunrise wellness sessions offer sanctuary for all-night dancers.

The landscape plays a soothing part in this experiment in pleasure. Trees have been planted, waterways restored and sapces set aside for permaculture and medicinal plants.

Spontaneity rules, with no need to follow a fixed programme. Afternoons disappear in a long lunch on a talk, evenings drift between stages and, by dawn, those still standing find themselves mesmerised by fields emerging slowly from their nighttime slumber.

November 15-24 | Sukhothai Historical Park

Moving from thumping basslines to candlelit silence, Sukhothai offers a gentler celebration.

As dusk falls, Thailand’s ancient capital begins to glow. Candles trace pathways between weathered stupas, ponds mirror illuminated temples, and the monumental Buddha statues of Sukhothai Historical Park slowly cast off the cloak of darkness.

Loy Krathong is celebrated across Thailand, but the sacred surroundings here make it magical. Floating krathong, candles, processions and performances unfold against ruins that have stood for centuries.

Arrive in the afternoon and explore the area by bicycle. Stay and watch as dusk settles, flames begin to appear across the park and the old city takes on a new personality.

The change of pace is part of the pleasure. Sukhothai rewards those who arrive early and linger, leaving time to wander beyond the main celebrations and explore quieter corners of the historical park before returning after sunset to see the landscape transformed by candlelight.

Yi Peng Festival

November 24-25 | Chiang Mai

Under November’s full moon, Chiang Mai transforms into a sea of light. Lanterns glimmer in lanes and temple courtyards, candles flicker after dark and floating lanterns (khom loi) drift into the night sky, illuminating the former capital of the Lanna kingdom.

Yi Peng marks the full moon of the second month in the northern lunar calendar. Sky lanterns released to pay homage to the celestial stupa Phra Ket Kaeo Chulamani Chedi carry misfortune and negativity away.

As the airborne counterpart to Loy Krathong, the festival fills the night sky with light. Around the Old City, temples such as Wat Phan Tao and Wat Chedi Luang glow beneath colourful hanging lanterns and intricate bamboo decorations, while crowds gather along the Ping River to float krathong downstream.

Yi Peng, at heart, remains an expression of Lanna faith, community and the enduring hope of new beginnings.

Away from the busy gatherings, the atmosphere can be hypnotically quiet: candles whisper in temple courtyards, families making silent merit, and lanterns gleam in deserted lanes. These small moments lend the festival a mystical character away from the iconic constellation of fire lanterns that lights up the night sky.

Bangkok Art Biennale 2026: Angels & Mara

October 29 – February 28, 2027 | Across Bangkok

For four months, Bangkok Art Biennale turns the capital into a sprawling gallery, with temples, heritage buildings, cultural landmarks and public spaces becoming showcases for contemporary art.

This year’s theme is Angels & Mara – a playful journey of opposing forces. Mara embodies desire and other obstacles to enlightenment, while angels are guardians of hope and protection. Between them lies plenty of territory for artists confronting conflict, environmental anxiety, social division and rapid change.

For travellers, the Biennale offers an alternative way of exploring Bangkok. Forget the conventional gallery crawl: follow the art and you find yourself on adventure between temples, old neighbourhoods, historic architecture and contemporary landmarks of the city.

That trip through time and space is part of the thrill. A single day may take you from a centuries-old religious site to a contemporary art space and then out onto Bangkok’s streets, with river crossings, noodle stops and unexpected detours just as interesting as the artworks themselves.

November 8 | Little India

Singapore launches its festive season with the festival of light.

Little India bursts with colour as elaborate illuminations bathe the lanes around Serangoon Road in a magical glow. Shops are piled high with flowers, sweets, decorations and gifts in preparation for one of the Hindu calendar’s most important celebrations.

Deepavali celebrates the triumph of good over evil, and the festivities are woven into the everyday rhythm of Singapore’s Indian quarter. Temples, sari shops, gold merchants and restaurants share streets filled with families shopping, worshipping and meeting friends.

Rather than a performance staged for visitors, this is a living tradition mixing sacred rites with family fun. Come respectfully and join a neighbourhood celebrating for itself. Come hungry, too. Sweet shops, vegetarian restaurants, curry houses and market stalls make for a vast street banquet that’s every bit as rewarding as the illuminations.

Arrive before sunset to catch the neighbourhood’s bustling pre-festival shopping, then stay after dark as the lights transform streets into a festive playground. This rapid switch from a crowded commercial hub to a glowing nighttime celebration is best experienced on foot.

Christmas Wonderland
Late November-New Year | Gardens by the Bay

In the steamy tropical heat, palms stand in for Christmas trees and cotton-wool snow piles up inside shop windows. Yet after dark, Christmas Wonderland blankets Gardens by the Bay in festive enchantment.

Illuminated installations compete with the rich scents of seasonal treats, while the iconic Supertrees loom overhead like something straight out of a futuristic Christmas card.

The fun lies in this surreal fusion: European festive nostalgia transplanted straight to the equator.

Pair it with an evening in Marina Bay and supper at a hawker centre for the ultimate Merlion Christmas. Singapore isn’t faking a winter wonderland – it has simply invented a brilliant new festive season.

The wider city joins in, too, making December a particularly good time to explore Singapore after dark. Orchard Road amplifies the illumination, while Marina Bay adds skyscrapers and waterfront reflections to festivities that light up when the tropical sun goes down.

Mid-November-Early January 2027 | Hong Kong

Come November, the city’s flair for illumination collides head-on with Christmas sparkle. Hong Kong WinterFest brings festive installations and seasonal celebrations to a skyline that already knows a thing or two about spectacle.

Victoria Harbour supplies the cinematic backdrop, while hotels, shopping districts and neighbourhoods join in with decorations, special menus and elaborate displays.

But don’t spend all your time here chasing Christmas lights. Take the Star Ferry for the spectacular skyline, duck down a side street for wonton noodles, ride a tram across the island, or head uphill for bird’s-eye views of the harbour.

Winter also brings some of Hong Kong’s most comfortable walking weather, making December ideal for exploring on foot. Wander through markets and neighbourhood streets, then let the harbour draw you back towards the waterfront as buildings begin to light up across the water.

December 2026 – New Year | Across the islands

After the lanterns, lasers, installations and dance floors, perhaps the greatest luxury is open space.

December is prime travel season in the Maldives, and resorts across the archipelago mark Christmas and New Year with everything from beach dinners and live music to wellness rituals, water sports and starlit parties.

There are Christmas trees and festive menus, naturally, but the Indian Ocean changes the mood entirely. Rather than scarves and snow, December here means warm water, white sand and beautiful sunsets.

Increasingly, resorts are also weaving Maldivian culture into the celebrations through island food, crafts, local music and the hypnotic rhythm of boduberu drums.

Christmas morning often begins with a swim, while dinner is eaten barefoot on the sand. And when midnight arrives on New Year’s Eve, there is nothing overhead but dark skies lit with brilliant stars.

The Maldives make a serene finale after two months of crowded streets, glowing cities and festival stages in Asia’s other festive hotspots. Here, the year ends on a gentle note: a boat on the horizon, dinner by the ocean and enough distance from everyday life to notice one year quietly shifting into the next.
