The Reyrun marathon returns to Hulhumalé on September 4, honouring Mohamed Thakurufaanu Al-Auzam, the legendary leader who liberated the Maldives from Portuguese rule in the 16th century. The race challenges runners to test their limits under the tropical sun – a symbolic tribute to the perseverance and discipline of Thakurufaanu’s historic eight-year naval guerrilla war. More than a test of endurance, the event brings together runners of all abilities to celebrate Maldivian heritage, blending athletic achievement with deep cultural pride.
